  What is...?
Routing number
A routing code is a nine-digit number that uniquely identifies a financial institution. The routing number is printed on the lower left edge of a check or deposit slip, and is used to ensure that ACH deposits (electronic transactions automatically processed by the Automated Clearing House) are directed to the correct bank or other financial institution. The Federal Reserve maintains a directory of routing numbers for financial institutions.
