  What is...?
Intermediary bank
When you make a financial transaction–for example, you write a check at the supermarket–your bank, as the paying bank, sends the funds to the market's bank, or the collecting bank. But most banks don't communicate with each other directly. Instead, your funds are sent from your bank to an intermediary bank, and from there they are sent to the collecting bank.
