Market Value of Stocks, and Options (short) The Market Value of Stocks, and Options (short) represents the value of all shares "short" in your account. Short shares are shares you have borrowed from your broker and sold, which you must buy back later and return to the broker. There are certain risks when you sell short, and it's important to know what they are before you place this kind of trade. The market value is determined by using the market price for each security as of the previous day's market close. If the "Show Real-Time" button is clicked, the market value shown will be determined by using the current, real-time market price for each security that is short in your account. The market price for long securities in your account will also be computed on a real time basis except for Bonds and UIT's which will be as of previous day's market close.
