appreciation
Appreciation is simply the amount by which the value of an asset increases. A gain typically implies profit on a sale. In the case of a cash exercise, you are actually keeping the shares you?re exercising. To help you understand the value of that investment we?re showing you the gain or appreciation on that investment?that is, the current market value of the shares you?re exercising less the price you?re paying to get those shares or the exercise cost.
